To BSD Or Not To BSD?

One of my pet hates is when people ask "What's the best OS?". Whilst it is true that I use and adore gentoo, I am careful enough to always help new users understand that it isn't really the distribution of Linux for them. Further I always try to make sure that I am fair with all distributions and not just that, with any OS choice at all.

I use Linux, I use BSD and I also use Windows. People ask me time and time again, which is better? Well sometimes Linux is, sometimes BSD is and sometimes Windows is. As always, what you wish the OS to do is the all important factor. There is never such a thing as the "best" OS, nor "worst".

There will always be people who see one side of the coin and are unwilling to budge but the fact is that no OS is perfect, they all have flaws. I am sure that a lot of people will be saying, Windows has more than any other. Well my view is that Windows is so heavily targetted that it will always have more than any other, no matter what they do to harden it.

So in answer to the question I say this, experiment. You should try each system, each distribution of each system and make your own mind up about these things. People can only ever give their opinion, everything else is just trash. Whilst I'm at it, don't be negative towards other users in their choice of systems. The fact is that if it brings them closer to enjoying computers, then its a success!
